Soil is of primary importance as most of the feeding network of roots lies within this area of soil with further main roots penetrating several layers of subsoil. The roots influence drainage and its depth affects the ability to collect minerals. Nutrient content including phosphorous, potassium and various metals, which affect the acidity, are essential to the growth of the vine.
Interesting Fact: There is little evidence that suggests soil content affects the flavour of the wine.
